VL1100 – The perfect dining chair

A VERMUND classic brought back to life

VL1100, also known as the “eye chair”, is an expressive dining chair designed by Vermund Larsen in 1956.

VL1100 is an impressive dining chair that immediately catches attention with its unique, organically shaped backrest. The chair exudes elegance with its combination of complementary materials: FSC-certified wood, conical-shaped legs in wood or steel, and seat upholstery in fabric or leather. The VL1100 is finished by hand at our facilities in Aalborg.

The material composition of the VL1100 reflects the trends in Danish furniture design in the 1950s. Yet the VL1100 design is timeless, and the chair’s light and elegant construction makes a stylish statement in any room.

Materials

All wood surfaces on the VL1100 are FSC-certified and produced by Danish manufacturers. The chair comes in three different variations: natural oak, black painted oak, and walnut. All surfaces are treated with a matte lacquer that requires minimal maintenance.

All textiles and leather surfaces are produced by Danish quality manufacturers and chairs are carefully upholstered using comfortable high-quality foam. We offer the following fabrics: Capture, Mood, Crisp, Hallingdal, and Re-wool as well as several different types of quality leather.

The frame is made of 20% recycled steel, which reduces the environmental impact of the steel’s resource-demanding extraction process.

The chair has reversible sliders, which prevent it from sliding on carpets and hardwood floors.

All chairs are finished by hand at our local production facilities in Aalborg, and each chair has its own unique ID-number with a 6-year warranty.

A dynamic and comfortable chair

The chair has excellent seating comfort and provides perfect back support. The seat provides excellent comfort in different seating positions, and the rounded top and “eye” carvings on the moulded, wooden backrest create energy in the chair´s visual expression.

The backrest is an essential part of the VL1100’s unique look, and the chair’s detail and finish highlight Vermund Larsen’s understanding of a simple and accomplished design. The slim legs make the chair light and elegant.

Originally created in fibreglass and steel, the VL1100 was the culmination of several years of work with fibreglass as a formative expression. The year before the VL1100 went into production, Europe’s first fibreglass chair was created by Vermund and Danish designer Ib Kofod Larsen in close collaboration. Several cafés around Copenhagen had the pleasure of being able to show off these innovative fibreglass chairs when they first became commercially available. In this reinterpretation of the VL1100, natural materials such as wood and leather have been chosen in favour of a fibreglass shell.

What shall I choose?

There are many options with the VL1100, and you can “build” the chair you prefer for your home. We have made a guide on what to look out for when going through the various options of the VL1100.

Before choosing the frame finish for your new chair, it is a good idea to look at what surfaces you have in your home to ensure that the furniture matches it. For example, is the room predominant in; Natural and wood, metal and glass or a mix? If you have a table with a metal frame, most customers choose the chair’s frame to match this.

If you prefer wood, we recommend choosing a finish that matches other wooden surfaces in your home, e.g. the tabletop on your dining table. It provides a beautiful visual whole around the dining area that your chairs and dining table go together perfectly. Mixing different types of wood can also give a beautiful and exciting dining room – it all comes down to your taste. Of course, wood also goes great with almost any other kind of dining table surface.

We recommend choosing the same type of wood for the backrest and frame!

All frames for the VL1100 are durable, easy to maintain and designed with conically shaped legs. Choose between:

Wooden frame:

  • Oak, nature: Classic and elegant look
  • Oak, black painted: Matte black surface with visible wood structure
  • Walnut: Beautiful finish with a dark glow

Steel frame:

  • Black: Powder coated with a matte and exclusive finish
  • Chrome: Polished with a shiny and decorative surface
  • Matte chrome: Chromated with a matte surface but still metallic

We recommend that the wood surface match other wooden surfaces in your home, e.g. the tabletop on your dining table. It provides a beautiful visual whole around the dining area where chairs and dining table go together perfectly. Mixing different types of wood can also give a beautiful and exciting dining room – it all comes down to your taste. Wood also goes great with almost any other kind of dining table surface.

The wooden surfaces of VERMUND chairs are easy to clean and require minimal maintenance.

For dining table chairs, we generally recommend leather, as it is easier to clean than fabric e.g. if you have small children in the family. On the other hand, fabric makes a beautiful finish but is more delicate to daily cleaning and maintenance.

You can choose between Re-Wool fabric, Sierra leather, and Dunes leather as a standard.

Re-wool is a beautiful fabric consisting of 45% new wool, 45% recycled wool, and 10% polyamide, which provides high durability and good seating comfort. It is a textile with a sustainable profile with a modern yet classic look that will last for many years.

Sierra leather has a durable surface that is easy to clean. It is uniform but with a visible leather structure that will retain its appearance for many years. Black Sierra has a uniform base colour, whereas cognac-coloured Sierra leather has a two-colour flaming, which creates a visual effect.

Dunes leather has a nice and soft surface. It is more open and breathable than the Sierra, which makes Dunes leather more sensitive to stains, but at the same time, this particular feature gives a beautiful patina over time. In addition, the leather has a natural and raw look with visible marks from the animal’s life, which makes each chair more unique in its expression.

If you want a different type of textile or leather, this is also possible, as we have an in-house upholstery workshop – contact our customer service for an offer.
